William Hill’s operations are based around three channels: online, retail (betting shops) and telephone betting.

• Retail – The William Hill brand is well known on most high streets in the UK and Ireland. This is a mature market with high barriers to entry and we have established a market leading position by taking advantage of opportunities such as extended opening hours and gaming machines. This business has, by its nature, high fixed costs and we focus strongly on costs and capital efficiency to ensure the business continues to return good profits and cashflow. Where opportunities exist to broaden the retail offering in mainland Europe, we do and will pursue them.
• Telephone – this business has seen some contraction as online betting has grown. Nonetheless there are opportunities to improve profit performance with a greater focus on cost and efficiency. Customer segmentation initiatives will also help to improve return on investment.
• Online – this new and expanding market provides a significant growth opportunity. William Hill Online will take the business beyond its traditional UK borders, and will open us up to new, generally younger customers in new territories. It will also enables us to service our existing customer base better through improved marketing and customer relationship management, and to offer our sports betting service to a wider European audience.
