After all of Nancy's hard work, their only prize of the season was a berth place in next season’s UEFA Cup. This was by far their best season in recent years.
St Etienne are also in the UEFA Cup. But they got through in a more complicated way. PSG has already qualified for a berth place in the UEFA Cup, by winning the domestic League Cup. Hence, neither PSG nor league champions Lyon need the UEFA Cup place. Lucky St Etienne. Meaning, a fifth place was enough to qualify.
As Rennes, they have the not so prestige chance of moving into next season’s Intertoto Cup.
At the other end of the table, Metz had to endure their poor run into the season. They were very far from the safe point in the league, before Yvon Pouliquen took over in December. It was too late for him to do anything to save themselves from the dreadful drop.
Coming to the end of the season, Strasbourg dug their own grave by allowing eleven straight defeats. On the final day of the season, however, they produced a wonder performance against Marseille which would serve them good by boosting their morale for next season in Ligue 2.
The curtain was about to drop for the season. But the relegation battle was extremely intense with three teams at the bottom of the table battle it out at the end of the season, on the final day. Lens, PSG and Toulouse was in a three way tug of war. Swords and spears were drawn out. Or in this case, boots and socks.
In need of a better result than the other two, Lens had a disallowed goal controversially disallowed in their 2-2 draw against Bordeaux. PSG had Toulouse netted single goal victories and produced great escapes.
Coming up from Ligue 2 will be Le Havre, who fought their way up deservingly. It is Jean-Marc Nobilo’s first season in charge of the senior team and they produced such a feat. The next team is Nantes, who are back after one season in the wilderness. Grenoble are the third team, who are almost unknown to most people. They were once in the top flight of Ligue 1, but that was 45 years ago.
The next season of Ligue 1 will once again commence on a Saturday, 9th August. With this season ending, all fans witness the rising quality of the French league. Au revoir!
